Using powerful descriptive words in your writing is so important! I always tried to give students a variety of ways to obtain “better” words to to use to replace some overly used “boring” words.

For years, I had synonym posters in my classroom. My students loved them. I then decided I wanted something easier for students to reference and more tangible. I printed my posters out small and put them on rings for students to use. THEN I decided I wanted something for students to use at home and school, so I took all my words and created a front/back reference guide.

I won’t lie. When I was a public school teacher,

I won’t lie. When I was a public school teacher, I was guilty of thinking homeschool kids lack social skills. I’ll even admit that almost all my thoughts toward homeschool were negative.

I just didn’t know what I didn’t know.

When the dyslexic specialist that I had evaluate Tanner suggested homeschool I smiled and listened to her suggestions as I internally rolled my eyes. As I started to consider it more, part of me truly thought it would be a mistake. I believed the “social skills misconceptions” and didn’t want Tanner to lack that or miss out on social opportunities.

I was incredibly wrong.

As I dived into homeschool I quickly realized how large the homeschool community is. There are definitely some “eccentric ” families who share almost none of the same educational values as me, but there are so many who do.

Tanner participates in multiple field trips each year with different homeschool groups in our community. He is involved in a weekly 90 minute PE program just for homeschool kids in our city. We occasionally go to fun meet ups around Orlando where he can hang out with other kids, outside of an educational setting. He also does normal after school activities. He plays outside daily with the neighborhood kids and as I type this he is at Boy Scouts (where I’m fairly certain he is the only homeschool kid).

There are so many opportunities to build friendships and improve social skills outside of public school.

Good morning and happy Monday!

Last week was really rough (and that’s probably an understatement). Thankfully I had a super relaxing weekend and feel ready for the new week. I woke up at 5:15 this morning to ride my Peloton with friends, ran 7 miles, and now we’re getting ready to start our homeschool day. What’s one happy thing you’re going to do today?

When I say “Tanner fell out of a tree and broke

When I say “Tanner fell out of a tree and broke his wrist,” I’m not talking about the big tree you might be imagining. I’m talking about this tiny tree. He slipped and just happened to land the wrong way 🤦🏼‍♀️

He’s been climbing trees since he was little, so figures that he falls out of a little baby tree that is clearly not meant for climbing.

I texted the picture to my mom and her response was “he can only climb big trees” 🤣

Thankfully he’s in great spirits. I think he’s looking forward to getting a cast next week so he can have his friends sign it. I’ve never broken a bone; have you ever broken a bone?!

Experiences will always be better than things. What’s one experience you spent “maybe too much on,” but was totally worth it? Disney cruises are definitely one of our guilty pleasures 🙈

6th grade math is going to be an adventure this ye

6th grade math is going to be an adventure this year and I’m learning more than ever that it’s okay to admit you don’t know something.

Tanner was getting frustrated because he kept getting a problem wrong yesteday. I tried showing him how to do it, then I got it wrong too 🤦🏼‍♀️ We both laughed and then spent the next 10 minutes learning together.

I highly don’t recommend this strategy on a daily basis, but it was a great lesson for both of us. Tanner got to witness firsthand me not knowing how to do something and I learned that thinking “this math looks familiar” is not the same as knowing how to do it 🤪 #lessonlearned

I could make a list a mile long of all the reasons I dislike homeschool, but there is one thing that makes it all worth it. Every single day I get to witness Tanner taking positive steps toward becoming a better reader. I get to watch his confidence soar as he realizes that his dyslexia will never stop him from doing anything he wants to do ❤️
